There are many common elements in the decision problems faced by Defence, Defence Industry, other Government agencies, manufacturing businesses, mining and natural resources companies and more.  Generally, strategic level decisions across all of these environments share common elements like uncertainty, multiple competing attributes, long time horizons and other elements which all lead to complexity. As a general rule, the more variables and uncertainty in a decision problem, the lower the probability that any given person or group will make an optimal decision without suitable quantitative analysis.  But doing this well needs a great deal more than just analysis.  Excellent decision support is a balancing act, and it requires as much art as science.  It is our belief that the best practitioners are well schooled in the science and techniques of decision support, but they also make it reachable, understandable and desirable to the people they are supporting. The analytical decision support process cannot and should not be attempted in isolation.  The greatest successes stem from an integrated collaboration of the decision scientist/s, domain experts and key stakeholders from the client organisation.  It is important to understand that decisions involving complexity and uncertainty also need to be made in the midst of other soft factors like organisational culture, politics and emotion. The best scientific techniques to solve the hardest problems never translate into organisation benefits if the human environment isn’t created for successful uptake of the proposed solution.
